Burgers at Eaten By Monsters

On Wednesday night, after a girls shopping trip up to Carlisle, the closest city to where we live (& more importantly the closest primark) we decided to rest a while and get some food before making the two hour drive home. Carlisle has several good places to get food, but Eaten By Monsters on Devonshire Street, is one of my absolute favourites.

Eaten By Monsters is a super chilled out place to go & grab some food & maybe a cocktail or eight. I've visited several times for both food & cocktails, although on this particular trip their were no cocktails to be had due to the drive home & my 6.30am shift the next morning.
However, they have an extensive drinks menu, from gin to draught beers to salted caramel vodka. There's plenty of choice & flavours for you to play with & the friendly staff behind the bar are always happy to recommend something new for you to try if you're having difficulty deciding.
I would totally recommend a good browse at their cocktail menu before ordering your usual drink! The Mile High Cosmo for a fruity cocktail, or their XO'spresso Martini for a alcoholic coffee fix, are two of my favourites.

While it may not be to everyones taste, I personally love the shabby chic, industrial Brooklyn loft style this place has.  The exposed walls, open fireplaces & eclectic wall art just helps this place ooze with a chilled out, cool vibe.
As someone who's worked in hospitality for years now, I find the staff always have the biggest impact of the atmosphere of a place, so when they themselves are friendly & relaxed, the place usually is too, & at Eaten By Monsters it's always been super friendly & chilled out.

We really did order food when we were starving. We over ordered massively. (I'm not complaining though, as I'm currently enjoying the left over halloumi scratchings as I write this.)

I went for their bacon cheese burger, with monterey jack cheese & maple bacon, with added onion rings, obvs - all of which hungry Emily was all about.
My friends went for the waffle chicken burger & the classic burger, both of which were reportedly as equally delish as my own burger.

Now, like I said, we ordered with our stomachs not our brains, because on top of our own burger & fries (although in our defence we didn't think we got fries unless we ordered them as it doesn't actually state on the menu that the burgers come with anything unless you add to your order..) we also decided to share 3 of their sides, the halloumi scratchings, the texan pulled pork nachos & the pepperoni pizza fries, all of which were awesome but we just could not finish - special shoutout to the halloumi scratchings which are just as mouthwateringly good re-heated the next day!

Like I said at the start of this post Eaten By Monsters is one of my favourite places to eat & drink in Carlisle. Put simply it's just a burger & fries kinda place, but it's a really good burger & fries kinda place. The service is fast & friendly, the food is just delicious & the prices are really reasonable for the portions you get.

I really love this place & would throughly recommend it if you're ever nearby. & I'm already trying to get some friends together for another night of cocktails here (with added halloumi scratchings.)

Almost Emily Jane take no. 368

Okay so 368 is probably an exaggeration, but I've genuinely lost count of the sheer number of times I've attempted to re-start this blog now. After originally getting into blogging back in 2012 & doing reasonably well with a blog mainly focused on beauty for a couple of years, I eventually told myself that I was 'too busy' & just didn't have the time to fit in blogging anymore, but in truth I think I got bored of my subject matter & it'd started feeling like something I 'should' be doing not something I wanted to be doing.

So I took a month off, which turned into six. I've deleted everything & restarted several times since then, I've written out plans & schedules, only to find them unused a few weeks later, but six years since the blogging bug first bit, I've still got the want to do this.

So here goes one more attempt.

I don't want to put my blog in a box this time, as that's how I've become bored in the past, or I've ran out of things to talk about - there is nothing more depressing than starting a travel blog, successfully writing for a couple of months about past trips, before realising that you don't have the money to book another trip anytime soon (Like, seriously, how do travel bloggers find the money?!) & there's only so many wanderlust wishlists you can write before it just starts to make you sad.

So what is 'almost emily jane' going to be about..? Well I suppose it'll be whatever I fancy at the time.
In a perfect world where I have lots free time & plenty of money it would predominantly be a travel blog, but that just isn't realistic right now, but thankfully I do have other interests & topics I want to write about.
So I guess, if I have to put my blog into a 'genre' lets just call it 'lifestyle' as that seems to cover a whole assortment of topics.

A little bit about me: -
A twenty-something hotel supervisor living & working in the English Lake District, I work highly unsociable hours & my weekends usually happen over a Monday & Tuesday, it's pretty high stress mainly because people, quite often, really are imbeciles, but most of the time I really love & am proud of where I work.
When I'm not working I am usually off on a trip somewhere, I am very prone to spur of the moment booking an airbnb & taking off for a few days - when my wage allows it.

I'm a film buff, history geek, avid photographer, music fanatic, hippy at heart & coffee junkie.

A few things I love (in no particular order): -
Seeing bands/musicians live. Coffee. Photography. Binge watching Friends on Netflix. Mexican food. Roadtrips. Dark spiced rum with ginger ale & a squeeze of lime. Vinyl. My doggos. Hiding out in cafes on rainy days with a good book or a good friend. Lush products. Ankle boots. Beautiful hardback books. Feminism. Tattoos. Watercolours. Van-life (one day). Rambling conversations.  Travelling. Unusual words with lovely meanings. Being by the sea. Skin care products. 'Weird' herbal teas. Girls supporting girls. Ice cream. Primarks' high waist skinny jeans.
